un·earth

to discover something in the ground
We as unearth do not represent a destination or an aim, it speaks only of an action in process, in continuation. Unearth represents the very essence of discovery. For which, an answer being a "stated truth" robs it of its imagination thus inconsequential, but the art of questioning forms an identity for itself.
Unearth represents the act of digging, peeling or investigating, feeling need to penetrate through the various layers and see every aspect in its entirety and not float on the surface. It does not limit itself to the built. Design, research, photography, policies, art, music all become a very integral part of the studio.
While, when we quite literally see the very definition of "unearth", it also speaks for another aspect for us. Building with your own hands with natural materials, is another principle this studio adopts off of this word. Be it discovery of stone, mud, pebbles, or rocks, the site tells its story in fragments and the studio attempts to stitch it together.
We believe that architecture is not the solution, but is an integral part of the solution where design is not a parallel process, it is intertwined with everything that surrounds it. Hence, Unearth as a practice strives to integrate nature, behaviour, art, ethics and functionality which helps it form its own aesthetic.
"Everything is design; Design is everything"- Paul Rand
Unearth considers itself as an observer and not just a designer, and the scale or the medium through which it explores does not limit it. From lamps to furniture to spaces, we design it all. From street to the built we try to capture it all. Every element owns its space and is allowed to breathe, which makes the smallest of the lines, the most integral if not the only part of its identity.
